I’m mystified by the title of this New York Times article. There’s nothing “new” about the famine in the piece, except that this time the New York Times is actually reporting it. Those of us who AREN’T Walter Duranty have always known the Soviets killed millions of Ukrainians, and that their motivation was both class and ethnically based.

That said, huzzah to the Times for running the article. My only quibble is that they reported widely different figures for the Holodomor death toll, without any examination of their merits. I’ll do some writing of my own on this subject in the near future.
