If irony were glucose, labor unions would put me in a sugar coma. These organizations ostensibly fight for the rights of the working man, but consistently undermine the rights and interests of the very people they claim to serve.

A few examples:

1. Unions oppose immigration reform, while the flood of illegals and unskilled legal immigrants depresses wages and unionization rates.

2. Unions extort union dues, and then use the money for expensive junkets for their bureaucracy.

3. Unions demand kamikaze contracts that kill of American businesses or force them overseas. Detroit spring to mind.

4. Unions support a raft of socially liberal issues that the average union worker abhors.

The latest example is too choice. The Service Employees International Union, one of America’s most militant unions, is firing 75 staffers to free up funds to pass card check legislation. That’s totally kosh, of course. Now if GM wants to fire workers to economize, of course, that’s unconscionable cruelty.

Naive people still imagine that labor unions worry about bread and butter issues. In truth, unions abandoned the interests of working people a long time ago. These days, ideology trumps interests every time.
