I’m thrilled at the speed with which solar is becoming ever-more economical. We’ve already had the game-changing shift on the solar panel side, with costs dropping like crazy; what everyone is waiting for now is a corresponding breakthrough with storage. Once we can use solar in a 24-hour cycle, we really can have massive solar penetration of the energy mix. Until then, it can only play an adjunct (though significant) role. I think the next 5-10 years will be decisive on the battery development front.
Fracking has given developed countries a great deal more leverage vis-a-vis OPEC, Russia, and others. It will be a beautiful day when we can be largely free of them entirely, both for our national interests, and the environment.
