Aside from writing books, my favorite diversion is Warhammer 40K.  It’s a great hobby for geeks, with so many angles to keep it fresh.  It involves model-building and painting, wargaming, and a complex lore encompassing 10,000 years and dozens of novels.

I was able to catch a tournament in Woodbridge a couple of weeks ago, and placed in the mid-ranks. Not bad, considering Northern VA has 7 out of the top 25 players in the country.

Warhammer is also great from a parenting perspective.  My kiddos and I have spent countless hours painting models together and then fighting epic battles on our tabletop.  And if you get your kids addicted to expensive British strategy games, they won’t have money to buy drugs!
