Not making a political statement, just an observation. The EU’s project to engender a “European” identity runs counter to the stream of history for the past 100+ years.

Everywhere else we’ve seen “uber” identities — imperial, Ottoman, British, Yugoslavian, Soviet, etc. — dissolve and give way to local, particular, national identities. Europe does have some advantages in this, as it’s building on historical identities such as “The West” and “Christendom”, as well as institutional structures such as NATO. Yugoslavia and the USSR, on the other hand, largely had raw power to hold things together.

Nevertheless, the EU is swimming upstream against a powerful current. It’ll be interesting to see if it tires and is eventually washed away, like so many multinational identities before them.
